Many thanks to all those that assisted - many did and made the event a pleasure to run.

With 39 lifters we did well to finish at 1700!

Middle Chea Triumphs

Chris Chea, middle of the three Woking Weightlifting brothers, had a great day at the English Weightlifting champs on Saturday (20th) winning the 69 kg class. He thus has the pair: British and English champion. Not only that but he defeated his arch rival Halil Zorba. Both are vying for a place on the Commonwealth Games team

Chris, at 68.8 kg, Snatched 110 kg and Jerked 142, to Total 152, not quite the Games Qualifier, but certainly an improvement on his progress towards it.

The win is a reward for his decision to give up work in order to train full time, without subsidy of any sort: no mean feat when considering his need to consume vast amounts of high protein and carbohydrate rich foods

Big brother Koing placed second in the 94 kg category with 118 and 143 kg to Total 161, a competition best. He was well beaten by Russian origin Denis Catana, who brings from his home country the benefit of a state and school system which honours and respects weightlifting.

Our Woking members now wait to see how ‘little’ sibling Chi (14), makes out at the British schools champs where he may add a fifth British title to his current tally.

We are proud of the three brothers and other top class Woking lifters, though the borough seems unable to find a way to increase the space available for the busy club beyond the current cramped and, at times, dangerous room it occupies: baffling as there is abundant underutilized space in the leisure centre, or so it seems to coach Brian Hamill.

For the Woking Open Champs next Saturday Brian has had to apply a guillotine as the entries were so numerous as to threaten to overwhelm the leisure centre facility! It seems that, suddenly, weightlifting is becoming popular.

Bethnal Green Invitational

Giles Greenwood is hosting a Annual Invitational comp on Saturday 3rd April (Easter Weekend)

For those who haven't attended before, it is an unofficial comp - new lifters taking part do not have to be members of BWLA.

There is one referee and the comp is decided on a pound for pound basis.

Lifting is split into into three mens groups (6-7 in each), one womens group, and each group is run on a round robin.

Numbers are kept purposefully low - a max of 21 men, 7 women (Roughly half Bethnal Green lifters and half others) so that it is reasonably short.

In all, it is fairly relaxed and most people who have lifted have said they enjoyed it.

There will be something for each group winner and a first and second prize for the top mens group.

Come along!

Phil McEvoy

Phil McEvoy

News of one of the London and masters stalwarts:  Phil has had a stroke on top of losing his wife at Christmas.
Many of us owe a debt of gratitude to the ever cheerful Phil, and we remember fondly how his wife supported events from her wheelchair.

They were 56 years married. That is a lot to get over.

If you want to send a message he is at 392 Field End Rd; Eastcote; HA49PG
